(Media, PA) – Spiezle Architectural Group, Inc., a regional architectural firm, is pleased to announce the recent selection as Associate Architect for the design of the Mosteller Garage in West Chester, Pennsylvania in association with the Harman Group Structural Engineers and Parking Consultants and BASCO/Buchart Horn.
The 800 car, eight (8) level parking facility is located in the Historic District of West Chester Borough. Spiezle Architectural Group, Inc. is specifically responsible to facilitate public participation; design guidance and public presentations, because of their experience and knowledge of the community, the site, and the building type.
The design process involved a great deal of communication with the public, because of the project size and critical location in the central business district. Two community information meetings were held to gather input and exchange dialogue with the Parking Committee, and Borough Council. Spiezle also made public presentations to the Planning Commission, and Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB), which provided addition public input as a part of the approval process, specifically addressing the mass, height and aesthetic of the exterior.
The solution to the exterior was to approach it as a series of smaller buildings, rather than one large facility. To reduce the perception of the overall composition, the facades were segmented into three basic styles. Materials that were similar to the surrounding context, such as brick and cast stone, were used in a tiered manner to further reduce the scale, by creating a base, middle and top. In the Romanesque portion of the building, we used arches similar to the Post Office across the street to combine 3 levels and further reduce the perceived size of the facility. A hierarchy of stair and elevator towers was used to designate the principal entrances.
