January 12, 2011 – Spiezle Architectural Group announces that West Chester University, Student Recreation Center, West Chester, Pennsylvania has been selected for publication in Penton Media’s American School & University 2010 Architectural Portfolio. The project is featured in the November 10 edition of the magazine and also on the Web at www.schooldesigns.com. An annual competition honoring education design excellence, the Architectural Portfolio spotlights projects representing some of the most effective learning environments in America.
The West Chester University Student Recreation Center is a 69,000 square foot facility that includes a fitness floor, jogging track, group exercise studio, rock climbing wall, (2) racquetball courts, (2) court gymnasiums, a multi0activity gymnasium, campus social space, offices, lockers, a café/ juice bar, and a free-standing/integrated parking structure. The $16,500,000 facility was designed consistent with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education standards.
A jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on Architecture for Education members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country. The jury considered the following specific criteria to make its selections: function, frugality, features, inspiring learning, flexibility and balance. In addition, the jury kept in mind: sustainability, maintainability, agility in planning, attaining “the vision,” and community use and integration.
