The project included raising the existing three story structure by two additional stories extending the building six stories above the street and covering the existing Emergency Department ambulance entrance. The project also connects the new two story expansion with a cantilevered bridge along the existing North Building at the seventh floor. New construction totals 60,000 SF. The expansion houses a new 42 bed Ortho/Spine Nursing Unit on one floor with the other floor dedicated to a 38 bed Acute Long term Care Nursing Unit for Select Medical. This required the creation of a hospital within a hospital for licensure. More
The existing Grass Building footprint was not designed to accommodate a traditional Medical Surgical Nursing Unit footprint, so internal courtyards were created to allow the requirement for diurnal light for patients. The one story cantilevered bridge permits the dedicated access to connect the existing hospital to the new two story vertical expansion. This connection was possible by cantilevering the structure from the existing North Building of the campus, by passing the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. Existing windows of this unit were changed to be clerestory type allowing shared natural light to enter through the bridge connection and offering privacy of the unit.
