This project features a full-service heavy equipment facility for Kelly Tractor Co., a fourth-generation, family-owned leader in heavy equipment sales, rentals, and service since 1933. The facility is strategically designed to support robust operations in equipment sales, parts distribution, and maintenance for construction, industrial, and agricultural markets, further strengthening Kelly Tractor’s long-standing commitment to exceptional equipment solutions and customer support.
Service-Driven Design
Designed to support both customer interaction and high-performance service operations, this facility expands Kelly Tractor’s capabilities across multiple markets. The front-of-house program creates an organized and polished setting for equipment display, parts sales, and administrative functions. Behind the scenes, 12 service bays outfitted with lifts and overhead bridge cranes anchor the maintenance operations, complemented by a dedicated loading bay to facilitate efficient equipment movement. Together, these elements create a streamlined workflow that improves service quality and accelerates delivery timelines.
Delivered through a collaborative design-build process with the contractor and owner, the project began with a deep dive into Kelly Tractor’s existing facilities to establish a more consistent and recognizable experience across locations. A primary goal was to design a space that reflects the company’s brand while carefully guiding how customers move through it. The entry sequence was intentionally planned to integrate the sales experience from the moment visitors walk through the door, creating a natural flow between browsing equipment, engaging with staff, and accessing parts. High ceilings and expansive glass elements were incorporated to elevate the environment, ensuring the space reads as a professional showroom rather than a traditional service garage, while also improving visibility across departments for both customers and employees.
Balancing this refined front-of-house experience with the demands of a highly functional service required thoughtful transitions between spaces. Clean vertical separations distinguish sales and office zones from the utilitarian back-of-house, while branded murals and large-scale photographic graphics immerse visitors in the world of heavy equipment. In the service area, the design prioritizes durability and maneuverability, allowing large vehicles to move efficiently through the facility. The number of service bays evolved during the design process to meet operational needs, ensuring capacity aligns with demand. Site planning also played a key role in this project, positioning the building for maximum visibility from Interstate 95 and reinforcing Kelly Tractor’s presence with clear, recognizable signage.
Ultimately, the design goes beyond functionality to create a meaningful environment that supports the people who rely on it every day. By thoughtfully aligning customer experience, employee workflow, and brand identity, the facility fosters stronger connections between people and the equipment that drives their work. The result is a space that not only performs at a high level but also enhances how customers engage, how employees operate, and how the Kelly Tractor team delivers reliable service to the communities they serve.
