For decades, the Haddonfield Township Police Department operated from the basement of a century-old Borough Hall, working within spaces that no longer reflected the safety, dignity, or operational needs of a modern police force. Limited space, aging infrastructure, and a lack of natural daylight created daily challenges for officers and staff while constraining the department’s ability to serve the community. Recognizing an opportunity to invest in both public safety and downtown revitalization, the Camden County Improvement Authority partnered with Spiezle to transform and expand a historic bank building into a modern police headquarters that preserves community character while supporting the department’s future.
Secure Civic Renewal
Through a thoughtful adaptive reuse strategy, this project reimagines the existing structure as a secure, highly functional facility designed to meet the demands of contemporary policing. The new headquarters provides essential operational spaces, including secure processing and holding areas, a sallyport, evidence storage, locker facilities, offices, training spaces, and dedicated support areas that improve efficiency, safety, and collaboration. Rather than erasing the building’s history, the design embraces it. The former bank vault was repurposed for secure departmental storage, transforming a defining architectural feature into a practical asset while maintaining a tangible connection to the building’s past.
Just as important as operational performance was creating a healthier and more supportive workplace for the employees. Large windows and reconfigured interior spaces bring natural daylight deep into the facility, replacing the enclosed conditions officers previously experienced and fostering comfort, visibility, and well-being throughout the work environment.
Beyond the building itself, the project strengthens the department’s relationship with the community it serves. A new public entrance and landscaped courtyard establish a welcoming civic presence, while enhanced lighting, refreshed architectural details, updated signage, and site improvements reinforce the building’s role as an integral part of downtown Haddonfield. The result is a facility that balances security with accessibility, creating an environment that is both professional and approachable.
More than a relocation, the project represents the reinvestment of a valued community asset. By preserving and reactivating an existing landmark, the new headquarters supports modern law enforcement operations, enhances officer well-being, and fosters public trust through a facility that feels both secure and connected to the character of Haddonfield. Today, it stands as a lasting civic resource designed to serve and protect the community for generations to come.
