District-Wide Expansion & Modernization | Metuchen Board of Education

Through a strong partnership with the Metuchen Board of Education and District leadership, Spiezle helped bring a shared vision for Metuchen’s schools to life. The $84 million District-wide improvements, expansion and modernization referendum delivered coordinated upgrades across all four schools enhancing learning environments, strengthening safety and security, and improving daily experiences for students and staff.  This comprehensive investment reflects the community’s commitment to educational excellence and positions the District for long-term growth, innovation and success.

modern, safer, smarter

In addition to the major building expansions, every school in the District benefited from essential infrastructure upgrades, including new electrical systems, modernized HVAC equipment, and mechanical improvements designed to enhance energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and long‑term facility reliability. These district‑wide enhancements ensure learning environments that are safer, healthier, and better equipped to support evolving program needs.

Beyond these shared improvements, each school received targeted upgrades to meet its unique priorities:

Moss Elementary School

At Moss Elementary School, an underutilized courtyard was transformed into a vibrant outdoor classroom and play area for Pre‑K students, expanding opportunities for hands‑on learning and exploration. On a challenging tight site, circulation was reconfigured to improve safety by separating student drop‑off and pick‑up from public entrances. Existing administrative space was converted into classrooms to accommodate growing enrollment, and a new three‑story addition now anchors the campus. This addition includes a cafeteria and kitchen, general classrooms, a STEAM lab, art and music rooms, and new playgrounds designed to spark creativity, collaboration, and joyful learning.

Campbell Elementary School

Campbell Elementary School received substantial interior and exterior improvements, including upgraded playground equipment and fully renovated basketball courts that provide welcoming outdoor spaces for play and physical activity. A new cafeteria and kitchen addition modernizes dining operations and enhances daily workflow, supporting both student needs and building efficiency.

Edgar Middle School

Edgar Middle School now features a redesigned main entrance that improves security, accessibility, and overall visitor experience. A new addition was constructed to house a secure, modernized main office suite, guidance suite and administrative offices while interior renovations delivered a new nurse’s suite, cafeteria improvements and enhanced special education classrooms. These upgrades ensure that students receive dedicated support in state‑of‑the‑art spaces.

Metuchen High School

Metuchen High School underwent one of the District’s most significant transformations. A major new gymnasium addition was constructed, complete with new locker facilities, fitness and training spaces, and multiple instructional classrooms to support both physical education and academic programming. Above the addition, a second‑story office suite was built to house the Board of Education, accompanied by a roof‑top patio that expands functional meeting and event space. Additional referendum funding supported upgrades to the football field and field house, addressing long‑standing priorities and enhancing facilities that play a central role in both school spirit and community life.

District Impact

Collectively, these projects modernize learning environments, expand program capacity, and elevate the experience of students, staff, and families across Metuchen. The referendum addressed critical infrastructure needs, such as mechanical, electrical, and environmental, while also investing in new instructional spaces, safer school entrances, upgraded athletic facilities, and improved circulation and site functionality.

These improvements position the district for long‑term growth, safety, and educational excellence, ensuring that Metuchen’s schools remain innovative, welcoming, and future‑ready for years to come.
