Educational Support Center | Sumter County School District
Spiezle partnered with Sumter County School District to tackle critical space limitations and operational inefficiencies in its century-old Maintenance, Facilities, and Support Services building, as well as two transportation facilities. The outdated buildings and site configuration made it increasingly difficult to maintain the District’s growing bus fleet and support daily facilities operations. As the District continued to expand, its five-year capital plan prioritized the development of a modern, centralized support services campus designed to improve efficiency, functionality, and long-term operational performance.
Elevating Operational Design
To better support daily operations across a growing district, Sumter County School District identified the need for a modern, centralized hub for transportation, facilities, and food services. The previous operations were dispersed across aging buildings that limited efficiency, collaboration, and the ability to adapt to evolving fleet and operational needs. Spiezle partnered with the District to design a consolidated support center that enhances operational workflows, improves staff experience, and positions the District for future growth.
With a centrally located 100-acre site already identified by the District, Spiezle focused on maximizing the site’s potential through thoughtful planning and strategic campus layout. The design improves access from both the north and south ends of the county, streamlines daily bus routing, and preserves flexibility for phased expansion. From the outset, the project received strong community support, recognizing the importance of investing in modern infrastructure that supports essential District operations.
The two-story facility brings multiple departments together under one roof, strengthening coordination between facilities, transportation, maintenance, and food services teams. The building also serves as the new home for the District’s Maintenance Department, consolidating administrative offices and hands-on operational spaces in a single, purpose-built environment.
The facility includes high-bay service areas with five double-height bus bays and a double-height warehouse, along with dedicated maintenance support spaces. Wood and metal shops and a centralized maintenance warehouse were designed to efficiently store parts, materials, and equipment needed to support ongoing repairs and improvements at schools throughout the District. Carefully planned electrical and mechanical spaces further support the building’s role as a high performing operational hub.
Staff wellness and professional development were also key priorities. Offices, training rooms, and shared spaces were designed to support bus drivers, maintenance staff, and other District personnel. A dedicated lounge, gym, and training room provide opportunities for staff connection, health, and ongoing learning in a tailor-made environment.
Beyond the building itself, site design played a critical role in the project’s success. In addition to planning the immediate needs of the Educational Support Center, Spiezle developed a comprehensive master plan for the 100-acre campus to guide long term growth. The master plan identifies future locations for a separate District administrative office building and a potential future school, while maintaining clear operational separation from transportation and maintenance functions.
The campus supports the District’s fleet of 88 buses and 20 white fleet vehicles with covered and secure parking, clearly defined fleet circulation zones, and on site fueling and bus wash facilities. Site access was carefully planned to improve efficiency, while preserving flexibility for phased development and future expansion. Campus infrastructure was also designed to support evolving technologies, including the potential transition to electric bus fleets and more sustainable operations over time.
Completed under budget, the Educational Support Center represents one of the District’s most significant and impactful capital investments. The new facility transforms daily operations, improves maintenance efficiency, enhances staff support spaces, and provides the flexibility needed to serve the community for decades to come.
