Aging Forward 2026: Exploring the Future of Senior Care

On August 5, Spiezle hosted its 8th annual Aging Forward event at Pennswood Village in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Once again, the event convened an engaged group of senior living leaders, partners, and industry voices for thoughtful conversation about the future of senior care.

The program centered on three timely topics shaping the senior living industry: the role of artificial intelligence in elevating memory care, evolving expectations among residents and staff, and the financial and operational capital needed for sustainable growth.

The Future of AI in Memory Care

The sessions began with a conversation focused on the future of artificial intelligence in memory care. With a 166% projected increase in dementia care needs over the next decade, attendees explored how AI may support both residents, care teams, and families through earlier detection, more informed interventions, and new ways to identify changes in communication patterns.

At the same time, the discussion acknowledged that technology is not a solution on its own. Participants considered the real-world barriers to implementation, including cost, privacy concerns, and the importance of exercising experienced, human judgment and nuance. A recurring theme was the need to balance information with action: more data does not automatically lead to better outcomes unless it is used thoughtfully and responsibly.

The discussion also raised important questions about how communities are communicating with families and residents around data in ways that are educational, transparent, and respectful.

Next Gen: The Evolution of Resident and Staff Expectations

Another session looked at how demographic shifts and generational expectations are reshaping senior living. As each incoming generation continues to influence the industry, attendees examined how resident, family, and staff expectations are changing across design, branding and culture of senior living communities.

A key takeaway was that supporting staff is an essential part of supporting residents. Participants were in full alignment that staff support spaces should receive the same level of investment as resident-facing spaces, and that thoughtful workplace design can support staff, culture, operations, and care quality.

Building a Path to Sustainability: Do the Math

The final session focused on how and when to embark on major capital investments from both a design and business perspective. Clients shared views on which design features they view as non-negotiable, the variables they consider most closely during expansion and renovation projects, and the strategic pressures surrounding capital planning and organizational capabilities.

Attendees reflected on what they might do differently if they could revisit their last major project, as well as how their missions are being evaluated and evolving.  The conversation reinforced the importance of aligning design decisions with long-term organizational goals, operational realities, and financial prowess.
