Collingswood Pocket Park | Borough of Collingswood
Once an underutilized parking lot and former gas station, a bleak parcel prominently located in the heart of the downtown business district has been transformed into a lively civic space now called the Collingswood Pocket Park. Located at the corner of Haddon and Woodlawn Avenues, the park now serves as a central gathering place, supporting everyday activity, community events, and spontaneous social interaction while reinforcing downtown walkability and vitality.
Small Space, Big Impact
In a downtown with limited public gathering places, the park was envisioned as a flexible, inclusive “third space” that complements nearby shops, restaurants, and cultural activity, supporting both quiet moments of respite and vibrant public programming. Through community surveys, collaboration with Green Team volunteers, and ongoing local input, the design responds directly to how residents and businesses were already informally using the site for pop-ups, markets, and seasonal gatherings.
Designed with adaptability, accessibility, and long-term performance in mind, the park accommodates people of all ages and abilities while supporting multiple scales of activity. Native gardens, many planted by volunteers, enhance biodiversity and provide year-round visual interest, while sustainability strategies such as stormwater reduction measures and rain barrels reinforce the Borough’s ecological commitment. Energy-efficient LED and string lighting extend usability into the evening, while a mix of permanent and floating seating encourages gathering, lingering, and connection. Clear sightlines and an open layout allow the space to function seamlessly for daily use as well as larger activations.
A dedicated performance stage and an outdoor produce stand at the rear of the park further activate the site, creating opportunities for artists, musicians, local vendors, and community events. These elements, along with opportunities for community art and “green” landscape expression, give the park both ecological depth and civic identity while drawing new visitors downtown and supporting local businesses through increased pedestrian activity and longer visits.
Collingswood Pocket Park is more than a small green space in a vibrant downtown; it is a civic catalyst that mirrors the character, values, and energy of the community it serves. From early visioning through construction and a celebratory opening, the project remained true to its original concept, demonstrating the power of a clear idea executed with care. By transforming an overlooked lot into an inclusive, people-centered destination, the park strengthens social connections, supports economic vitality, and reinforces the small-town charm that defines Collingswood, proving that even small urban spaces can deliver lasting community impact when thoughtfully designed.
